two for the diary

Up-coming gigs:
27 July The Kings Arms Salford
An all dayer (and part of Greater Manchester Fringe)
What's the Alternative...

We have a fantastic line up:
The Getsettes from Blackpool
Four piece. 60's influenced. Rhythhm and Blues.
Have a listen on Soundcloud here

Millie Manders from London
Millie is as off the wall off the stage as she is on it. A bubbly and bright singer songwriter from South London who writes punchy, punky, bouncy rock pop songs that get you on your feet and moving. Scratch the surface though and lyrically her tough upbringing and life experiences can be felt too.
Her website is here

The Repeat Offenders from Ayelsbury
They're The Stone Roses meet The Rolling Stones with an Oasis attitude with Richard Ashcroft vibe to even things out. Their website is here.

The Speed Of Sound from Manchester (yes, that's us)
Music vs The World said we are "a merger between Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones and Lou Reed."
You can read the whole piece here if you like.

The Swiines from Nottingham
The Swiines with two 'i's, no decriptions, just let the music speak - seat-belt fastening is advised.
Their website is here

And
The excellent Rock And Roll Lounge DJs will be providing the music before, between, and after the bands
You can get a taster of what might get spun from their sets on Mixcloud here
DJ-ig starts at 2pm bands on from 5pm

As you can see this is going to be quite a day.

Chalk Circle - Live

Chalk Circle was in the acoustic session we did at TV21 last week, the dummy ending demands power so we did a shorter version without it, here’s a full band Live recording including the coda
Here
Full of bleak darkness, Chalk Circle has been a live set favourite since early 1990 and is on the first album The Speed Of Sound At Tree Level.

Chalk Circle

I’ve drawn a chalk circle right around me
I’m going to stay in it I am never going to leave
Its going to keep you out its going to keep you away
I’m on my own in here and that’s how I want it to stay

I put out the light and I stay inside
Sometimes its hell just staying alive
You can’t touch me you can’t even get near
I can’t see anything that you describe

I know what it is to be so far down
There’s no doubt about it I am underground
I see no evil I hear no pain
Nothing can reach me through my chalk surround

I listen to the rhythm within me
I hear only sounds in my head
I do not move I seldom bother breathing
I sometimes wonder if I am dead
I sometimes wonder if I am dead

I am empty just an echoing jar
Remote and untouchable as the North Star
My memories are fading into the past
I am now completely insular

I send out no signals and get none in return
I can not remember the things I have spurned
The turmoil is gone and I know only peace
I can not go back for the bridges are burned

I listen to the rhythm within me
I hear only sounds in my head
I do not move I seldom bother breathing
I sometimes wonder if I am dead
I sometimes wonder if I am dead

I know what it is to be so far down
There’s no doubt about it I am underground
I see no evil I hear no pain
Nothing can reach me through my chalk surround

I sometimes wonder
I sometimes wonder
I sometimes wonder
If I am dead

John Armstrong 28 Feb 1990

two Live acoustic sets

The remarkable Billy Seagrave took some fabulous pictures during A Slice Of Nice at TV21 on Sunday 30th March. He’s terrific at catching ‘the moment’ and capturing the essence of live music.

The songs given the stripped down arrangement treatment on the day were:

The Wargame
Love
Checkered Land
Only Everything
Chalk Circle
Girl On The Roof
Sit By The River
There’s No One There

We also played a short set at The Blue Cat in Heaton Moor on Monday 24th March 2014:

The Wargame
Love
Checkered Land
There’s No One There

Thanks to both venues to and everyone that came down for their support

(and thanks to whoever painted the space-girls mural)
